Most of the preceding reviews of Mike Swanson and his Wall Street Window website are right on the money. The way he makes his money is through subscriptions. The only reason I gave a half a star is, as another reviewer said; the blog contains some very insightful people after you spend some time to winnow out the chaff. Another reviewer was also correct in saying that Breakpoint trades is a much better site.
Any member that dares to ask the wrong questions, or go against the prominent party line, is flamed terribly.
I believed Mikes hype when I was first getting into investing and looking for trustworthy information. He ended up costing me a significant sum, not for the subscription, but because I believed in a stock he recommended. He said he was buying in, it looked very good, good, reputable people on the BoD, as it continued on a downward slope, I tried in a variety of ways to get a response out of him what he now thought of the stock. There never was an answer of any sort.
As another reviewer said, his so-called 'class', is a joke.
In one exchange on his blog, a poster asked a question about some web pages that kept popping up (can't remember the exact details) Mike deigned to reply himself, as this was a prominent poster, his answer was that that was his 'Chinese' guy that designed his advertising for his Wall Street Window, it was just 'sucker candy'( my words).
I now avoid all such blogs and bulletin boards, I have a couple of trusted small sources, one for technical, one fundamental. They both know and trust each other. Even then, I read what they say, but have learned enough to make my own decisions. Small subscription sites like these are the best, they are not large 'money making mills', like another one out there that might have something to do with the initials 'CR'. They also charge a reasonable fee, I don't mind paying for what I get, as long as I get what I pay for. Sometimes when you get something for nothing; you get what you pay for.
Really appreciate this site and the ability to give a review on WSW, I've thought of him and his site over the last few years, and would like to help others mitigate the mistakes I've made. Can't stop them, we all have to learn the hard way.
BTW, (by the way, in the 'new' language) I arrived at this site by doing a google search for 'Mike Swanson Idiot'. he he.
When I signed up with this service a little over a year ago, Mike Swanson was keeping a list of stocks on his trading list with updates posted whenever something needed to be changed. Not long after I signed up, Mike made some picks that didn't work out and resulted in some losses. I didn't have a problem with that (nobody is perfect). But, some members did and got on his case pretty badly.
As a result, Mike soon did away with his stock pick list and stopped posting any trades he was making. For the last several months that I was in this service, there were no trades that Mike said he was involved with, although he would give a couple stock picks with a preface of "If you really have to trade something...". Every time, he was waiting for a better time to buy. That time never came before I left.
When I signed up, I also asked if I could get the lifetime membership. That would keep me in the service for a one-time fee which was less than the cost of 2 yearly subscriptions. He replied back that I would be given the opportunity when it was time to renew. When that time came, not only did I not receive notice that it was time to renew, but he attempted (through PayPal) to charge my credit card for another year of service. The card he had on file had been canceled by me and so he never got his money and I left the service. I never received any notification about the renewal or any offer for the lifetime membership.
The one good thing about WSW is it's members posts. There are some sharp traders in the blog area that can make you some money. It just takes some time to get the feel of who to follow and who not to. Because of the trading community, I give this any stars at all.
There's nothing else there worth paying for. Even the "course material" is rather basic and something you can get from a book a lot cheaper.
Mike Swanson is uniquely dangerous because I think he believes his own hype and therefore presents himself in a very casual, unassuming and unpretentious manner. He is convinced that his limited methods of analysis and approach are the only logical ways to address the markets, yet they are short sighted, simple minded and tunnel visioned. He is obsessed with certain ideal phenomenon taking place before he is willing to place a trade, which therefore compels him to often see their impending unfoldments even when doing so is quite unjustified. Those who disagree he calls lazy and stupid. I avoided being the target of his insults, while paying for his advice, and consequently got seriously burned by not heeding the hard won lessons I had accumulated from much past experience.
He also offers his free Stock Mastery Course with the subscription. He describes the use of certain so called Magical Indicators in a way that describes a recipe for certain disaster. Rather brief historical research can verify this which makes one wonder what he's been thinking about during his supposed considerable years of experience.
As another reviewer stated, Mike Swanson ( Wall Street Window ) is a great marketer. If you sign up with him to make money though, you are wasting your time and money. They do not post their trades, always waiting for pullbacks, miss every rally and just complete BS. I found BreakPointtrades to be far better. Also, his forum is about like Yahoo messages. Everytime you post you are flamed by a bunch of idiots.
Former subscriber that got fooled
I subscribed to Wall Street Window for a year but ended up cancelling my subscription about half way through. Mike is a marketing person, do a google search and you'll find him talking about how much money he makes marketing his website (that's how he lives, he pulls in half a million a year through subscriptions). He didn't handle constructive criticism well. He didn't post his results and would not respond to requests to post historical returns, which was a red flag for me. He may be a good trader, but was not a good mentor or person to follow. There was a lot of theory and prognostications, but very little in the way of actual trading examples.
